In-situ, i.e. at the point of consumption, production of hypochlorite is an alternative to gaseous chlorination and dosing of commercial sodium hypochlorite solution for water disinfection that eliminates their disadvantages. In the case of chlorine gas dosing, there is, especially for built-up areas, a risk of leakage of this toxic gas and endangerment of the population. Current installations need to be fitted with powerful neutralisation systems for leaked chlorine gas, which are costly in terms of investment. Dispensing commercial sodium hypochlorite is cheap and simple. However, the lifetime of the hypochlorite solution is limited and its improper storage not only reduces the concentration of the active substance but also leads to the formation of by-products of decomposition (chlorites, chlorates), the concentrations of which are limited in drinking water.

All the above disadvantages are overcome by in-situ production of hypochlorite, where a fresh sodium hypochlorite solution is prepared by electrolysis of brine. This produces a solution with a concentration of 20-25 g/l of free chlorine. The system is equipped with an analyte removal system to increase the final purity of the product. The combination of a high chlorine concentration in the product and high purity creates a significant advantage over competing products in the category.
