The compact membrane bioreactor technology (MBR = Membrane BioReactor) combines biological treatment processes using activated sludge and membrane separation. The technology is specially designed to produce a high quality, suspended solids-free effluent that can be reused.

The MBR consists of plate or hollow fibre and replaces the conventional separation stage, gravity settling tank or flotation. Thanks to the effective barrier for all bacteria and partly for viruses, the purified water is partially hygienized.

MBR technology is also suitable for the intensification of existing wastewater treatment plants without the need for demanding construction of new tanks. By installing MBR separation, it is possible to operate the biological stage with a higher concentration of activated sludge and thus increase the capacity of the treatment plant within the existing tank volumes.

Regular cleaning of the membranes is necessary for proper efficiency of the membrane separation. During operation, the membranes are cleaned by aeration. Cleaning is carried out at regular intervals by backwashing with purified water and automatic chemical flushing (MC - Maintenance cleaning) several times a week. Twice a year, a thorough chemical cleaning (RC - Recovery cleaning) is carried out.
